SHORT-LIVED FAME OF ORKUT

Popularity in Brazil

Orkut became popular in Brazil during a moment when internet access was expanding, but still uneven. For many people, social media did not begin inside a private bedroom or on a personal laptop. It began in shared spaces.

Raquel was 15 years old in 2007 when, out of the blue, everyone her age began to talk about Orkut. At that time, nobody in her village had a computer at home. Many still did not. So, just like her school friends, Raquel saved her school lunch money and used it instead in one of the local internet cafés.

Internet cafés became temporary portals into another social world. They allowed people to create profiles, check messages, visit communities, and participate in a digital culture that was becoming increasingly important.

For many Brazilians, Orkut was not just a website. It was one of the first public stages of online life.

This is why Orkut mattered culturally. It did not simply reflect Brazilian social life; it also reorganized it through profiles, comments, testimonials, communities, and visible social connections.
